The basic principles of individual attacking in football

In general, attacking is much harder than defending. Why? Because attacking usually requires more advance (and advanced) thinking. In other words, a defender reacts - while an attacker has to have a plan if he is going to have a good chance of success. In addition, attacking requires better ball control than defending, because it is difficult to keep possession long enough to get within scoring range by just whacking at the ball. As a result, the coach must spend a lot of time in developing the ball control skills of his players, and in training them in the various elements of individual attacking.

Individual attacking has 3 basic phases. The first phase is what is commonly known as the First Touch phase. The quality of the First Touch, and the planning which goes into this First Touch, often will be the key difference between a successful attacker and one who constantly bombs out. The second phase is the actions required to beat any field defenders, so that you are 1 v 1 with the keeper (called "field attacking"). The final phase is the actions required to beat the keeper and/or last field defender blocking the ability of the ball to "see" the goal so that you can put the ball in the net. This final phase will be called Finishing (although it is important to bear in mind that the other phases may be compressed into this single phase, with a ball received in a way which allows the very first touch to be a shot on goal).

Indeed, any time that an attacker realizes that the ball is going to come to him, his first decision should be "do I have a decent chance at scoring a goal with my first touch?" If the answer is "yes", then he must always make the attempt to score. As noted later, a player misses 100% of the shots which he does not take, and it is critical to educate young players early in the notion of thinking about a shot first.

If no shot is "on" with the first touch, then the player must get the ball under control and take another look to see if a shot is now available (because defenders move around - so a momentary opening may have arisen). If a shot is still not "on", then he must figure out the best route to take to get into a good scoring position, then look once more for the chance for a shot. In other words, he needs to remember that his ultimate objective is to score goals.

Italian minister calls for calcio lay-off

A series of meetings in Rome to discuss Sunday's day of violence across Serie A ended with the country's sports minister calling for Italian football to be suspended. Giovanna Melandri met with Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) president Gianni Petrucci and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Giancarlo Abete, after which she demanded considerable action be taken.

"A decision has to be taken to make a significant gesture," said Melandri.

"I expect the football world to make the right decision, such as halting the tournament for several weeks.'"

Lazio fan Gabriele Sandri, a 26-year-old disc jockey, was accidentally shot dead by police as they attempted to quell trouble between fans of the Biancoceleste and Juventus at a motorway service station near Arezzo.

News of the shooting prompted violence on the terraces at the game between Atalanta and AC Milan in Bergamo while, later in the day, fans in Rome armed with batons and stones attacked one of the police units in the vicinity of the Stadio Olimpico before raiding the CONI headquarters.

Sam Allardyce has warned that it will be Newcastle's medical staff rather than England's who will decide whether Michael Owen is fit for international duty.

Owen's astonishingly rapid recovery after keyhole surgery has put him back in contention for England's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia later this month.

The England striker has already started light training and could even play some part in Newcastle's home match against Everton on Sunday.

It now looks odds on that Steve McClaren will name the 27-year-old in his England squad on Friday, but Allardyce insists it will be Newcastle who takes the final decision on Owen, and not the England manager or FA medical staff.

Allardyce said: 'A decision like that is taken by me, the club doctor, the head of sports medicine, the senior physiotherapist, the person who reads the scan and the specialist.

'The FA and Steve McClaren are not involved. It's a Newcastle United decision.

'There's no one more qualified than the staff at Newcastle to know what Michael's condition is and if and when we ought to be doing anything about it. My job is to get him fit to play for Newcastle. If he's fit for us, it means he will be fit for England.'

Owen was operated on last week by German specialist Dr Ulrike Muschaweck, who repaired an adductor muscle tear in his groin and a weakness in his stomach to prevent a hernia.

She said Owen should be back to full fitness after 'eight to 10 days, a maximum of 14'.

Allardyce insisted that there was no way Owen could have continued without surgery.

He added: 'Despite the speculation, Michael couldn't have continued playing. He has a three centimetre tear in the abductor muscle in his groin and he just couldn't have kept going. The tear would have just got bigger had he done.'

Spanish champions Real Madrid plan to open a soccer academy on Indonesia's Bali island by 2008, the academy director said on Wednesday. By August next year, certified coaches from the Primera Liga giants will start training 9-18 year olds in a lavish sporting and dormitory complex to be built in the resort area of Canggu on the island, academy director Carmen Yahya said.

PT Realindo Sports Indonesia, the club's local venture, has secured a go-ahead from the national sports council and the ministry of education to open schools in Bali and Jakarta.

'We signed the deal in June and now we are rolling out plans to have the academy set up, first in Bali, then hopefully in Jakarta by 2009,' said Yahya, a sports medicine and psychology expert.

Students will be charged an estimated £10,000 for an intensive 10-month training period. The best players will get a chance to take part at a special camp in the club's hometown Madrid.

Yahya said Indonesia's 220 million population has so far been an untapped source of talent.

'The academy will be the first of its kind in the country and is expected to produce world-class players from Indonesia and the surrounding region,' she said by telephone.

For promotional purposes, the company also plans to launch a sponsored soccer training camp at the end of this year, where Real Madrid trainers will coach champions of a local soccer match for under eighteen-year-olds.

Mourinho leaves Chelsea after crisis

Chelsea have confirmed that manager Jose Mourinho has left the Stamford Bridge club by 'mutual consent' after three trophy-laden years at the helm. He is understood to have contacted five senior players yesterday afternoon to inform them of his departure and by midnight the entire first team squad had learned he was going. Peter Kenyon, the club's chief executive, Bruce Buck, the chairman, and Abramovich's key aide, Eugene Tenenbaum, were called to an emergency meeting at Stamford Bridge last night to discuss the emerging crisis.

The club eventually confirmed Mourinho's departure in the early hours of this morning when they posted a statement on the club's official website. The statement read: 'Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho have agreed to part company today (Thursday) by mutual consent.' Many of Chelsea's staff and players had been enjoying a relaxing evening at a Fulham Broadway cinema last night as they watched a screening of `Blue Revolution'` - a new documentary about the Abramovich years.

But senior players like captain John Terry and England midfielder Frank Lampard were absent and the remainder, except a reluctant England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips, refused to talk to the media. Mourinho also attended the evening but ignored the waiting media and looked decidedly glum. Former Chelsea player Didier Deschamps has emerged as one of the frontrunners to replace Jose Mourinho as manager at Stamford Bridge.

Deschamps, who captained France to glory in the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, is now one of the names in the frame to replace Mourinho. Deschamps began his coaching career with Monaco before joining Juventus. But he resigned from the Italian club in May 2007 and is currently unemployed. He spent a year with Chelsea as a player in 1999-2000 - winning the FA Cup. It is understood the impasse between Mourinho and Abramovich came to a head after their 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa earlier this month.

Mourinho has been at loggerheads with the Russian since their disagreement over the lack of funds to sign players during last January's transfer window. Mourinho's reluctance to play Andriy Shevchenko and the Russian's desire to bring in Avram Grant from Portsmouth to work with the misfiring striker only served to heighten the tension. The former Israel coach was recruited in the summer as director of football and Mourinho is understood to have simmered ever since. Now Grant is expected to be in charge for Sunday's clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Mourinho's departure will be followed by his backroom staff although assistant Steve Clarke is expected to remain on the payroll for now. The Portuguese - whose £5.2 million a year contract was due to expire in 2010 - has been dismayed by the constant watering down of his authority. Abramovich's decision to recruit Dane Frank Arnesen from Tottenham as director of scouting and youth development in September 2005 was compounded further by the arrival of Grant. But their dismal start to the new Barclays Premier League campaign and their 1-1 draw with Rosenborg in the Champions League on Tuesday only served to heighten the problems and Mourinho decided he had reached the end of the road.

He had won every domestic honour since his arrival in England in the summer of 2004 but the Champions League eluded him. Although he won the trophy with Porto in 2003, Chelsea were twice knocked out of the competition at the semi-final stage by Liverpool during his tenure. The club confirmed Mourinho's backroom staff have also left the club. Chelsea moved swiftly following the shock departure of Jose Mourinho as they announced that director of football Avram Grant and assistant manager Steve Clarke will take charge of the first team.

Mourinho, who won every domestic trophy during his time at Stamford Bridge, left by 'mutual consent', according to a club statement issued in the early hours of this morning.

Grant, who moved to Chelsea in the summer as director of football, will be assisted by Mourinho's number two and former club captain Steve Clarke. A club statement read: 'Chelsea can confirm that Avram Grant and Steve Clarke will be in charge of the first team from today (Thursday).

'The club is delighted that in Avram we have an experienced man who can come in immediately at this difficult time to help deliver our objectives. 'In Steve we have a Chelsea man and he will be a crucial part of the management team going forward. Avram and Steve have our full confidence and support.' Grant's appointment is understood to be permanent and will come as no surprise to many of the club's fans. The former Israel coach has a close relationship with the club's billionaire owner Roman Abramovich and moved to Chelsea despite stiff opposition from Mourinho.

Abramovich saw Grant as the man to get the best out of misfiring striker Andriy Shevchenko and Mourinho finally agreed to his arrival on the understanding that he had no influence on team affairs. But in the light of Mourinho's sudden exit, Chelsea have turned to Grant to prepare the side for Sunday's crucial Premier League clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford. Mourinho is understood to have said his goodbyes to the players at the club's Cobham training ground on Thursday morning. Grant spent his first year in England living in Harry Redknapp's shadow at Portsmouth but his move to Chelsea saw him become the go-between and co-ordinator of long-term strategy, reporting to chief executive Peter Kenyon at Stamford Bridge. The role - which reportedly earned him £800,000 a year - also included a seat on the club's board.

Grant, who is married to actress Tzofit, certainly knows how to network and also undoubtedly has the ability to charm the most dogmatic of managers. Upon Grant's arrival at Chelsea a defensive Mourinho warned: 'He must not interfere with the power I have in relation to my job.' Grant took up the position of technical director at Portsmouth in June 2006 and soon won the glowing praise of boss Redknapp. 'I've found [him] to be very knowledgeable, an absolute gentleman and a nice person to have at the club - he has got a good knowledge of the game and of foreign players,' said Redknapp. That knowledge stems from a lifetime of studying football tactics and systems.

Grant began coaching at the age of 19 having never played the game professionally. He won the youth championship with Hapoel Petach Tikva and was then appointed to coach the senior team, becoming the youngest ever manager in the Israeli top division. Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has warned Europe's top clubs that Michael Ballack is not for sale.

The Chelsea chief, speaking at the launch of a new sponsorship tie-up with Etihad Airways, also confirmed that the Germany captain's ankle injury was the sole reason for his absence from their Champions League squad. Ballack's absence sparked fresh speculation that the midfielder would be sold in January's transfer window with Real Madrid favourites to land him.

There are different types of strikers. Brazil’s Romario and Germany’s Janker both have the same role, but work through their own methods. Effective forwards do share some basic characteristics significant for their success:

1. Positioning – there are plenty of attackers who lack skills but score simply because of their positioning.
